Baltimore Ravens…Looking For Another Solid Season

In 1996, Art Modell, owner of the Cleveland Browns, decided to move his team to Baltimore. Initially there was some opposition, but that ended when an agreement to leave the Browns record, colors, name, and history in Cleveland was made. When Modell moved to Baltimore, it was to start an expansion team, although he did keep the same players.

For their first two years, the Baltimore Ravens played in Memorial Stadium, but the stadium was old and not suitable for a professional football team, and so the M&T Bank Stadium was built. Originally called the Ravens Stadium at Camden Yards, PSINet bought the naming rights in 1999, but lost them when the company went bankrupt in 2002.

The stadium name went back to Ravens Stadium until 2003 when M&T Bank bought the naming rights. The plaza in front of the stadium is named after Johnny Unitas, a former Ravens quarterback and Hall of Famer who died in 2002. With seating for more than 71,000 people, the stadium is a must see for any Baltimore fan, visitor, or tourist.

The Baltimore Ravens are the only team in the NFL that has a male cheerleading squad, known as the “stunt team.” Aside from their game day activities, the Ravens cheerleaders are active in the community and abroad, participating in charity events and putting on shows overseas for American troops. Like the other NFL cheerleading squads, the Baltimore cheerleaders are responsible for representing the organization both during football season and in the off season by making appearances and getting out into the community.

Off the field and out in the community the Baltimore Ravens are active volunteers, and often participate in or donate to charity events and organizations. Memorabilia, tickets, appearances, and money are all donated to worthwhile causes throughout the community.

They also have their own foundation, the Ravens Act Foundation, which was started to further efforts in the community. The people of Baltimore are lucky and grateful to have such a caring group of people to help around the area and give back to the less fortunate.

On January 28, 2001, the Baltimore Ravens made history when they defeated the New York Giants in the Super Bowl. They were only the third team in history to win the Super Bowl as a wild card team. That was the only Super Bowl that the Ravens have ever been to so far but it is a memory the fans and citizens of Baltimore won’t soon forget.

As one of the NFL’s younger teams, the Baltimore Ravens have an interesting history. They are always entertaining on the field and off the field; they are a great bunch of people. The citizens of Baltimore, and Maryland as a whole, have a lot to be thankful for and proud of in this team.
